Chiefs Season Preview
The Return
6–11 in 2025 · Mahomes Returns · Bieniemy Reunited · S³ Projection: 11–6
The Chiefs enter the 2026 season with one of the league's widest ranges of outcomes. A year after finishing 6–11, Kansas City is attempting to rebound behind the return of Patrick Mahomes, a revamped running game, and another offseason of roster reconstruction.
The Defense Kept Them In It
The 2025 statistics reveal a team that was better than its record in several areas. Defensively, Kansas City ranked 6th in points allowed and 10th in total defense, led by Chris Jones, Nick Bolton, George Karlaftis III, and Drue Tranquill. The defense consistently kept games within reach despite receiving little offensive support.
The Offense Told a Different Story
Kansas City finished 21st in scoring, 20th in total offense, and 25th in rushing — numbers that are well below the standard established during the Mahomes era. The season changed dramatically when Mahomes suffered a torn ACL and LCL, ending his campaign and forcing the offense to operate without its franchise quarterback.
🔥 Offseason: Veach Attacks the Weakness
General Manager Brett Veach attacked that weakness during the offseason. The acquisition of Kenneth Walker III gives the Chiefs a more explosive rushing threat, while Justin Fields provides one of the league's strongest backup quarterback options as Mahomes continues his recovery. The return of Eric Bieniemy as offensive coordinator also reunites one of the NFL's most successful quarterback-coordinator partnerships.
Key Departures
Kansas City did, however, lose several important contributors. The departures of McDuffie, Watson, Cook, Chenal, Omenihu, Pacheco, and Taylor force younger players and newcomers to fill significant roles, particularly in the secondary.
AFC West Outlook
The AFC West also factors into this projection. The Raiders remain in a rebuilding phase, while the Chargers still have important questions to answer. Denver projects as Kansas City's biggest challenger for the division.
🏆 S³ Prediction
If Patrick Mahomes returns healthy and Kenneth Walker III helps elevate a rushing attack that ranked 25th last season, the Chiefs should field a more balanced offense and return to playoff contention. While the defense may experience some growing pains replacing key departures, the combination of Andy Reid, Steve Spagnuolo, and Mahomes keeps Kansas City among the AFC's most dangerous teams.
S³ Verdict
🏆 A healthy Patrick Mahomes and an improved running game should be enough to push Kansas City back into the postseason with a projected 11–6 record.
