2026 Cincinnati
Bengals Season Preview
AFC North Contenders · Rebuilt Defense, Elite Offense
The Bengals attacked their biggest weakness this offseason: the defense. After finishing near the bottom of the NFL in points and yards allowed, Cincinnati invested heavily in proven veterans instead of relying solely on rookies. The result is a roster that looks playoff-caliber on both sides of the ball.
⭐ Biggest Move
The Bengals traded the No. 10 overall pick to acquire Dexter Lawrence II, one of the NFL's premier interior defensive linemen, then signed him to an extension through 2028.
2025 Defense — By the Numbers
Cincinnati's defense was the clear weak link in 2025. The numbers tell the story of a unit that needed a complete overhaul — and got one.
S³ Defensive Breakdown
492 points allowed and only 21 takeaways — the defense finished near the bottom of the NFL in nearly every category.

Offensive Continuity
The Bengals kept the core intact. Joe Burrow leads one of the league's best offenses with an elite receiving corps and a capable run game — continuity that gives Cincinnati a significant advantage.
2026 Defensive Additions
A massive talent upgrade on every level of the defense — defensive line, edge rusher, and secondary all received proven veteran reinforcements.
Acquired via trade for the No. 10 overall pick. One of the NFL's premier interior defensive linemen, signed through 2028.
Proven interior disruptor who strengthens the defensive front alongside Lawrence.
Adds a legitimate pass rush presence off the edge.
Physical, experienced safety who improves the backend immediately.
Brings range and toughness to the safety position.
Adds depth and versatility to the cornerback room.
2026 Draft Class
The draft focused on adding pass rushers, secondary depth, offensive line help, and developmental depth to round out the roster.
Pass rusher with upside.
Secondary depth and development.
Offensive line help for the future.
Developmental receiving talent.
Offensive line depth.
Tight end depth and development.
Defensive line depth.
S³ Analysis
This offseason clearly shows Cincinnati understood what cost them games. The 2025 defense allowed 492 points, 6,475 yards, 2,500 rushing yards, and generated only 21 takeaways — numbers that put the entire burden on Joe Burrow and the offense.
Adding Dexter Lawrence II, Jonathan Allen, Boye Mafe, Kyle Dugger, Bryan Cook, and Ja'Sir Taylor gives them a tougher run defense, a stronger pass rush, and more experienced playmakers in the secondary.
The offense was already capable of putting up points with Joe Burrow leading one of the league's best receiving corps. If the defense improves from the bottom five into the middle of the league, Cincinnati becomes much more dangerous.
S³ Keys to Success
S³ Prediction
If the rebuilt defense gels quickly and Burrow stays healthy all season.
If the defense still struggles against the run and fails to generate consistent pressure.
S³ Final Verdict
This looks like a playoff-caliber Bengals team and one of the more improved defenses in the AFC entering the 2026 season. Elite quarterback play, an elite receiving duo, a significantly improved defensive front, better safety play, and full offensive continuity give Cincinnati the roster to challenge for the AFC North title. If the defense comes together quickly under defensive coordinator Al Golden, the Bengals are a legitimate contender.
