Performance Over Reputation: The Contenders Are Separating Themselves
Seven weeks into the 2026 NFL season, the contenders are beginning to separate themselves from the teams struggling to find their identity.
Minnesota remains undefeated, San Francisco has suffered its first loss, and Kansas City faces questions after Seattle exposed its offensive limitations.
Meanwhile, Cleveland continues winning despite its troubling slow starts, the New York Giants have emerged as the team to beat in the NFC East, and the NFC South remains a division where almost anything can happen.
At the bottom of the rankings, Philadelphia is approaching an organizational crossroads, Tennessee must evaluate Cam Ward, and the Los Angeles Chargers are still searching for their first victory.
The S³ Power Rankings recognize performance over reputation. A team's accomplishments on the field carry more weight than preseason expectations, popularity or past success.

S³ Outlook: Minnesota's defense is performing at an all-time pace. If the offense begins matching that level of execution, the Vikings could become the NFL's most complete team.
#2 San Francisco 49ers (6–1) | S³ Rating: +36.29
San Francisco's undefeated season is over, but its championship ambitions remain intact.
The 49ers suffered their first defeat, falling 29–20 to Atlanta.
Four turnovers proved costly, while injuries and weaknesses in the secondary gave the Falcons opportunities to attack.
San Francisco remains one of the NFL's strongest teams, but the loss demonstrated that its vulnerabilities can be exploited.

#3 Kansas City Chiefs (5–1) | S³ Rating: +27.67
Seattle exposed Kansas City's offensive limitations in a surprising 20–3 defeat.
The Chiefs struggled to establish offensive rhythm, and injuries at wide receiver have significantly reduced Patrick Mahomes' available weapons.

#10 Cleveland Browns (5–2) | S³ Rating: +12.14
Cleveland keeps winning, but its method of winning raises concerns.
The Browns defeated Tennessee 27–24, securing their fifth comeback victory of the season.
Every Cleveland victory has required a comeback.
That demonstrates resilience, but it also exposes a recurring inability to establish control early in games.
S³ Outlook: Comebacks are entertaining, but relying on them every week isn't sustainable. The Browns must start faster, especially against Pittsburgh.
#11–20: PLAYOFF CONTENDERS AND TEAMS AT THE CROSSROADS
#11 Detroit Lions (4–2) | S³ Rating: +10.17
Detroit's defense showed encouraging signs in its victory over Green Bay.

#27 Washington Commanders (1–4–1) | S³ Rating: −34.67
The Commanders remain mathematically alive, but their performance suggests otherwise.

Tennessee's remaining season is becoming an evaluation of Cam Ward's future.
The Titans fell 27–24 to Cleveland despite another competitive performance.
At 1–6, Tennessee must begin looking beyond its record.
The organization needs to determine whether Ward is developing into a franchise quarterback capable of leading the team into the future.
That evaluation must include his decision-making, ability to read defenses, performance under pressure and leadership.
The Titans must also assess the offensive line and supporting personnel around him.
S³ Outlook: The remaining games are Cam Ward's opportunity to demonstrate that he is Tennessee's quarterback moving forward. The organization must determine whether to build around him in 2027.

S³ Outlook: Jim Harbaugh, the coaching staff, Herbert and the roster must all be evaluated. Los Angeles needs more than its first victory. It needs evidence that the organization has a sustainable direction.
S³ FINAL VERDICT: THE NFL'S BALANCE OF POWER IS TAKING SHAPE
Week 7 revealed several important developments across the league.
Minnesota is setting the standard. The Vikings' defense continues performing at a level that deserves historical consideration. If the offense develops greater consistency, Minnesota could become the NFL's most complete team.
The NFC North and AFC North are the league's most competitive divisions. Minnesota, Chicago, Detroit and Green Bay are all fighting for position, while Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Cincinnati and Baltimore remain legitimate factors in the AFC North.
Seattle and Atlanta delivered statement victories. The Seahawks dominated Kansas City, while the Falcons handed San Francisco its first loss.
Cleveland continues defying expectations. Five comeback victories demonstrate resilience, but the Browns must learn how to establish control earlier in games.
The Rams are approaching a turning point. Los Angeles is one victory away from .500, and its win over Las Vegas could provide the momentum necessary to recover from a disappointing start.
The NFC South remains wide open. Carolina leads the division despite its humiliating loss to Tampa Bay. Atlanta, Tampa Bay and New Orleans all remain in contention.
Philadelphia, Tennessee and the Chargers face difficult organizational questions. The Eagles may be approaching sale mode, the Titans must evaluate Cam Ward, and the Chargers must determine why a team with playoff expectations has failed to win a single game.
The season is far from finished, but the performances are beginning to tell a clear story.
Greatness isn't measured by reputation. It's measured by performance.
