PERFORMANCE OVER POTENTIAL. PRODUCTION OVER REPUTATION.
Five weeks into the 2026 NFL season, the contenders are beginning to separate themselves from the pretenders.
San Francisco remains undefeated, Minnesota is making a statement defensively, and Kansas City hasn't lost a game. Meanwhile, several preseason favorites are discovering that championship expectations mean very little once the football is kicked off.
The biggest surprise in this week's S³ Power Rankings might be the New York Giants, who have climbed into the top 10. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Rams, once considered a potential NFC juggernaut, have fallen into the bottom half.
The rankings reflect performances through Week 5, including Monday night's overtime thriller between Buffalo and Los Angeles.
THE TOP 10
1. San Francisco 49ers (5–0) | S³ +40.2
San Francisco remains the standard following its thrilling 32–29 victory over Seattle.
The 49ers have scored 154 points through five games while surrendering 93, maintaining their undefeated record despite dealing with key injuries.
Nick Bosa's calf injury remains worth monitoring. His presence matters, but San Francisco needs continued production from its defensive front.
At 5-0, the 49ers have earned their position atop the rankings. They aren't simply surviving games. They're finding ways to win them.
2. Minnesota Vikings (5–0) | S³ +37.0
Minnesota's defense is beginning to look special.
The Vikings defeated New Orleans 23–13 and have now allowed just 64 points through five games.
That's an extraordinary defensive start.
Minnesota's offense hasn't always been spectacular, but when a defense consistently limits opponents to fewer than two touchdowns, the offense doesn't need to carry the entire burden.
The Vikings remain undefeated and are making a compelling case as one of the NFC's premier championship contenders.
S³ Take: Five games. Five victories. Only 64 points surrendered. Minnesota deserves its place among the elite.
3. Kansas City Chiefs (4–0) | S³ +31.3
Kansas City enjoyed its Week 5 bye and remains one of three undefeated teams.
The Chiefs have generated 118 points while allowing 77 through four games.
Kansas City's offense continues producing at a high level, and the additional rest could prove valuable as the schedule becomes more demanding.
The Chiefs haven't lost, and they remain one of the AFC's strongest teams.
4. Jacksonville Jaguars (4–1) | S³ +24.6
Jacksonville is establishing itself as a legitimate AFC contender.
The Jaguars defeated Philadelphia 19–17 in London, improving to 4-1 while continuing to demonstrate impressive defensive discipline.
Jacksonville has surrendered only 70 points through five games, giving it one of football's strongest defensive starts.
The offense still has room to improve, but the Jaguars have something championship contenders need: a defense capable of keeping them competitive regardless of the circumstances.
5. Baltimore Ravens (4–1) | S³ +19.4
Baltimore's 30–23 overtime victory against Atlanta demonstrated the importance of having a dependable backup quarterback.
With Lamar Jackson sidelined by an ankle injury, Tyler Huntley stepped in and delivered.
Huntley led the late comeback, connected with Devontez Walker for the tying touchdown and scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime.
Baltimore also generated 208 rushing yards, giving its offense the foundation necessary to overcome Jackson's absence.
S³ Take: Huntley didn't need to become Lamar Jackson. He needed to win the football game. Mission accomplished.
6. Buffalo Bills (4–1) | S³ +18.6
Josh Allen put the Buffalo Bills on his back Monday night.
Allen rushed for 121 yards as Buffalo escaped Los Angeles with a spectacular 37–34 overtime victory over the Rams.
The Bills have generated 164 points through five games, demonstrating why their offense remains among the NFL's most dangerous.
Nevertheless, Buffalo's defense has surrendered 141 points, an alarming total for a team with Super Bowl aspirations.
The Bills can score with anybody. Whether they can consistently stop championship-caliber opponents remains another question.
7. New York Giants (3–1–1) | S³ +7.6
Who expected the New York Giants to be sitting here entering Week 6?
New York's surprising start continued with a wild 27–27 overtime tie against Washington.
The Giants had an opportunity to win before Cam Skattebo's late fumble gave Washington possession. Fortunately for New York, the Commanders mismanaged the final seconds and failed to attempt a potential game-winning field goal.
The Giants haven't been spectacular statistically, but they've become a difficult football team to put away.
At 3-1-1, New York deserves recognition for its early-season performance.
8. Seattle Seahawks (3–2) | S³ +5.8
The defending Super Bowl champions have already suffered two defeats following their 32–29 loss against San Francisco.
Seattle remains dangerous offensively, but its defense has struggled with consistency.
The Seahawks have generated 134 points through five games, but they've also allowed 105.
With San Francisco sitting at 5-0, Seattle cannot afford to surrender additional ground in the NFC West.
9. Chicago Bears (3–2) | S³ +4.6
Chicago's promising start took a significant hit following its 31–7 defeat against rival Green Bay.
Getting Caleb Williams healthy remains the priority. The Bears have a considerably different offensive ceiling with their franchise quarterback under center.
Chicago has demonstrated enough early-season potential to remain competitive in the NFC North, but its latest performance exposed legitimate concerns.
The Bears need their quarterback back.
10. Cincinnati Bengals (3–2) | S³ +3.8
Cincinnati returned to the win column with a 31–24 victory over Miami.
Joe Burrow delivered four touchdown passes, helping the Bengals improve to 3-2.
Cincinnati has generated 128 points through five games, demonstrating legitimate offensive capability.
Nevertheless, the defense has been inconsistent, allowing 109 points.
The Bengals remain firmly in the AFC North race, but continued improvement will be necessary to challenge Baltimore.
THE MIDDLE OF THE PACK
11. New England Patriots (3–2) | S³ +3.2
Drake Maye is playing like the MVP candidate he was in 2025.
New England demolished Las Vegas 45–17 behind an outstanding performance from Maye, who threw for 374 yards and accounted for five touchdowns.
The Patriots accumulated 536 yards of total offense, overwhelming a Raiders team that entered the season with three consecutive victories.
New England is back above .500, and Maye is providing plenty of reasons to believe the Patriots can become a serious factor in the AFC East.
12. Detroit Lions (3–2) | S³ +3.2
Detroit's offense remains elite. Its defense? That's another conversation.
The Lions dismantled Arizona 45–21, with Jahmyr Gibbs rushing for 151 yards.
Detroit has scored 164 points this season, matching Buffalo's offensive production.
Unfortunately, the Lions have surrendered 148 points.
Injuries involving Brian Branch, Rock Ya-Sin and Tyleik Williams have complicated matters, but defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard needs to find solutions.
S³ Take: Detroit has the offense to compete with anybody. Does it have the defense to win a championship?
13. Las Vegas Raiders (3–2) | S³ +0.6
Remember when the Raiders were 3-0?
Las Vegas has now lost two consecutive games following an embarrassing 45–17 defeat against New England.
Kirk Cousins struggled, and the Patriots overwhelmed a Raiders defense that entered the contest hoping to rebound from its first defeat.
Las Vegas has scored 132 points this season but surrendered 129.
The Raiders are still above .500, but their once-promising start has suddenly become a test of resilience.
14. Pittsburgh Steelers (3–2) | S³ +0.4
Aaron Rodgers continues finding ways to win football games.
Rodgers threw three touchdown passes as Pittsburgh defeated Indianapolis 34–22. Jaylen Warren added 188 scrimmage yards, giving the Steelers another dimension offensively.
Pittsburgh remains competitive in the AFC North, although its overall production has been inconsistent.
At 3-2, the Steelers are positioned to remain in the playoff conversation.
15. Green Bay Packers (3–2) | S³ −1.6
Green Bay delivered one of its most impressive performances of the season, dismantling Chicago 31–7.
The Packers have endured an uneven opening stretch, but Sunday's victory demonstrated that this team possesses the talent to compete in a difficult NFC North.
Green Bay has generated 104 points while surrendering 112 through five games.
The Packers need more consistency, but their latest performance represented an encouraging step forward.
16. Denver Broncos (3–2) | S³ −2.8
Denver improved to 3-2 after defeating the Chargers 23–17.
The Broncos continue finding ways to win despite an offense that has struggled to consistently generate points.
Denver has scored only 97 points through five games while allowing 111.
The Broncos deserve credit for maintaining a winning record, but their overall performance leaves considerable room for improvement.
17. Cleveland Browns (3–2) | S³ −3.8
Cleveland owns a winning record, but its offensive struggles remain concerning.
The Browns suffered a disappointing 17–12 defeat against the Jets in a rain-affected contest that included several costly offensive mistakes.
Cleveland has scored only 93 points through five games.
The Browns' defense has kept them competitive, but Deshaun Watson and the offense need to become considerably more productive.
A winning record is encouraging. The performances haven't always been.
18. Carolina Panthers (2–2) | S³ −4.0
Carolina enjoyed its Week 5 bye following an impressive victory over Detroit.
Bryce Young and the Panthers have generated 121 points through four games, demonstrating legitimate offensive firepower.
Tetairoa McMillan's emergence has provided Young with another dangerous weapon, giving Carolina one of the more intriguing young offenses in the conference.
The concern remains defensively.
Carolina has surrendered 109 points through four games and needs improvement on that side of the football to translate its offensive production into consistent victories.
19. Dallas Cowboys (2–3) | S³ −13.6
Dallas can score points. Unfortunately, so can practically everybody playing against Dallas.
The Cowboys suffered an embarrassing 24–16 home defeat against previously winless Tampa Bay.
The Buccaneers generated 419 yards of offense, including 241 rushing yards, against a Dallas defense that continues struggling.
The Cowboys have scored 138 points this season but surrendered 136.
Their offensive talent is undeniable. Their ability to consistently stop opponents remains highly questionable.
20. Los Angeles Rams (2–3) | S³ −14.2
The Rams were supposed to be a juggernaut.
Instead, Los Angeles has stumbled to 2-3 following another disappointing defeat, this time a 37–34 overtime loss against Buffalo.
Matthew Stafford threw for 383 yards and three touchdowns, giving the Rams every opportunity to win.
Davante Adams caught two touchdown passes, bringing his regular-season career total to 121 and tying Hall of Famer Larry Fitzgerald.
Nevertheless, questionable late-game decisions and special-teams failures proved costly.
Sean McVay's decision to run on third down in overtime, rather than giving Stafford another opportunity to attack the end zone, deserves scrutiny. Los Angeles ultimately relied on a kicker whose previous attempts had already been problematic.
The Rams entered the season with enormous expectations after stacking their roster.
Five games later, all they've managed to stack is three losses.
S³ Take: Reputation doesn't win football games. The Rams have plenty of talent, but they're not producing the results expected of a championship contender.
21. Atlanta Falcons (2–3) | S³ −14.6
Atlanta came painfully close to defeating Baltimore before suffering a 30–23 overtime loss.
Michael Penix Jr. suffered a rib injury late in regulation, eventually forcing Tua Tagovailoa into action.
The Falcons controlled portions of the contest but couldn't stop Tyler Huntley when it mattered most.
Atlanta has demonstrated offensive potential, particularly with Bijan Robinson, but finishing football games remains a concern.
Penix's health will be one of the team's biggest storylines heading into Week 6.
22. New York Jets (2–3) | S³ −14.6
The Jets collected another victory, defeating Cleveland 17–12 in an ugly, weather-affected game.
New York's defense continues providing opportunities, but the offense remains a work in progress.
The Jets have scored only 93 points through five games while surrendering 96.
Winning ugly still counts, and at 2-3, New York has kept itself competitive.
Nevertheless, the offense must improve if the Jets intend to make meaningful progress.
23. Indianapolis Colts (2–3) | S³ −16.8
Indianapolis' 34–22 defeat against Pittsburgh highlighted several questionable fourth-down decisions.
The Colts repeatedly passed on opportunities to take points, with those decisions becoming increasingly costly as the contest progressed.
Indianapolis has generated 124 points through five games while surrendering 138.
The offense is capable of moving the football, but poor execution and defensive inconsistency continue hurting the Colts.
24. Philadelphia Eagles (2–3) | S³ −18.0
Philadelphia's offensive problems are becoming impossible to ignore.
The Eagles suffered another disappointing defeat, falling 19–17 to Jacksonville in London.
Philadelphia has scored just 92 points through five games, and its offense continues looking stale and inefficient.
The Eagles have also surrendered 112 points.
This team entered the season with championship expectations, but its performances have consistently fallen short.
At 2-3, Philadelphia has considerable work ahead.
THE BOTTOM EIGHT
25. Washington Commanders (1–3–1) | S³ −27.8
Washington might have produced the most frustrating finish of Week 5.
The Commanders were in position to defeat the Giants in overtime after recovering a Cam Skattebo fumble and advancing into field-goal range.
Instead, poor clock management allowed the remaining seconds to expire before Washington could attempt the winning kick.
Jayden Daniels' return provided an encouraging offensive spark, but the final sequence overshadowed his performance.
The Commanders have also surrendered 149 points through five games.
A 27–27 tie felt like a loss considering the circumstances.
26. Houston Texans (1–4) | S³ −28.4
Houston finally secured its first victory with a convincing 26–3 performance against Tennessee.
Will Anderson Jr. delivered a dominant defensive effort, recording three sacks and giving the Texans something positive to build around.
C.J. Stroud also delivered a productive performance as Houston controlled the contest.
The victory was encouraging, but one win doesn't erase four losses.
The Texans have significant ground to recover.
27. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1–4) | S³ −30.4
Tampa Bay finally broke through with a 24–16 victory against Dallas.
Undrafted rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels delivered an impressive performance, while Bucky Irving rushed for a career-high 165 yards.
The Buccaneers generated 419 yards of offense and exposed Dallas' struggling defense.
It was an encouraging victory for a team desperately needing positive momentum.
Nevertheless, at 1-4, Tampa Bay has very little margin for error.
28. New Orleans Saints (1–4) | S³ −34.6
New Orleans suffered another defeat, falling 23–13 to undefeated Minnesota.
The Saints have surrendered 151 points through five games, placing tremendous pressure on an offense that hasn't demonstrated the consistency necessary to win shootouts.
Their defensive struggles remain one of the biggest concerns in the NFC South.
New Orleans needs significant improvement to avoid falling further behind Carolina and Atlanta.
29. Arizona Cardinals (1–4) | S³ −38.8
Arizona looks increasingly like a rebuilding franchise.
The Cardinals suffered a 45–21 defeat against Detroit and have now surrendered 162 points through five games.
Their defense has been overwhelmed, and the offense hasn't demonstrated enough consistency to compensate.
The organization's recent roster decisions have also raised questions about its long-term direction.
Arizona appears to have considerably more questions than answers entering Week 6.
30. Los Angeles Chargers (0–5) | S³ −51.0
The Chargers are officially in crisis territory.
Following a 23–17 defeat against Denver, Los Angeles remains winless.
Justin Herbert has struggled, the offense has generated only 84 points through five games, and the defense has surrendered 129.
At 0-5, the playoff outlook is already bleak.
If the Chargers cannot reverse their fortunes soon, questions surrounding the coaching staff will only intensify.
31. Tennessee Titans (0–5) | S³ −52.2
Tennessee's difficult season continued with a 26–3 loss against Houston.
Rookie quarterback Cam Ward continues experiencing growing pains, while the Titans have scored a league-low 58 points through five games.
The offense is struggling to consistently move the football, and the defense has surrendered 109 points.
Tennessee remains one of football's most disappointing teams.
32. Miami Dolphins (0–5) | S³ −54.4
Miami remains winless following its 31–24 defeat against Cincinnati.
The Dolphins have scored only 70 points through five games while surrendering 132.
Neither side of the football has demonstrated the consistency necessary to compete, leaving Miami searching for answers as the season continues slipping away.
The Dolphins occupy the bottom of the S³ rankings for a reason.
S³ BOTTOM LINE: THE STANDINGS DON'T TELL THE ENTIRE STORY
Five weeks into the season, three teams remain undefeated, but that doesn't mean they're all playing at the same level.
San Francisco remains the standard. Minnesota is establishing itself as a defensive powerhouse, and Kansas City continues navigating its season without a defeat.
The New York Giants have emerged as one of football's biggest early-season surprises, while Jacksonville is demonstrating that its impressive start is no accident.
Buffalo and Detroit possess explosive offenses, but both face legitimate defensive concerns.
And then there are the Rams.
A roster constructed to compete for a championship has instead produced a 2-3 record. Los Angeles might look impressive on paper, but five weeks of football have exposed the difference between potential and actual performance.
Baltimore deserves special recognition as well. With Lamar Jackson unavailable, Tyler Huntley stepped in and delivered a victory that could prove important as the season progresses.
There are still 12 weeks remaining in the regular season. Plenty can change.
But through five weeks, the S³ message remains clear:
REPUTATION DOESN'T EARN POINTS. PERFORMANCE DOES.
