Beginning with the 2026 NFL offseason, the conversation has shifted. This is no longer about short-term fixes or patchwork solutions - this is about building identity.

After the massive shake-up that defined the 2025 season, franchises across the league now enter what Sweet Science Sports calls the "From Confetti to Calculus" phase - where every roster move is intentional, strategic, and definitive.

For the first time in years, teams are no longer scrambling to figure out who they are. They are deciding something much more important:

"Do we build a new foundation - or expose the flaws we've been hiding?"

With that in mind, Sweet Science Sports presents its annual team-by-team needs analysis heading into the 2026 season.

Team-by-Team Needs Breakdown

Las Vegas Raiders

Needs: QB, WR, OL, DL  |  Focus: Find a franchise quarterback

The Raiders are in full rebuild mode. Holding the No. 1 overall pick, the direction is clear - identify and secure a franchise quarterback. Every decision from this point forward should revolve around that foundation.

New York Jets

Needs: QB, Edge, WR, CB  |  Focus: Reset the quarterback position

The Jets are still searching for stability under center. After cycling through veteran options with little success, the only path forward is to draft and develop a long-term quarterback solution.

Arizona Cardinals

Needs: QB, OT, DL, G  |  Focus: Trenches + quarterback decision

Arizona stands at a crossroads. Commit to Kyler Murray or move in a new direction. Regardless of the decision, one thing is certain - without improved offensive line play, this offense cannot function at a high level.

Cleveland Browns

Needs: QB, WR, OL  |  Focus: Define offensive identity

A new head coach brings a familiar question: who is the quarterback? Cleveland must improve pass protection while establishing a clear offensive identity moving forward.

Dallas Cowboys

Needs: Edge, LB, DB, S  |  Focus: Defensive rebuild

After losing key contributors on defense, Dallas is retooling its identity. Expect heavy investment in pass rush and secondary depth as the Cowboys look to restore balance.

Chicago Bears

Needs: Edge, S, OL, DL  |  Focus: Pair a pass rusher with Montez Sweat

Chicago is on the verge of a breakthrough. Adding a true edge threat opposite Montez Sweat could elevate this defense into one of the league's elite units.

New England Patriots

Needs: OT, Edge, WR  |  Focus: Protect the QB, create pressure

New England must improve in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Protecting the quarterback and generating consistent pressure are immediate priorities after last season's defensive struggles.

Miami Dolphins

Needs: QB, WR, Edge, CB  |  Focus: Toughness and stability

Miami faces two defining questions this offseason:

  • Who is the long-term quarterback?
  • How do they fix a pass rush lacking physicality?

To compete in the AFC, the Dolphins must add toughness and consistency across the roster.

Kansas City Chiefs

Needs: DE, RB, WR, OL  |  Focus: Balance the roster

Even with elite coaching, Kansas City has clear gaps - particularly along the offensive line and defensive front. Protecting the quarterback and adding playmakers remain top priorities.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Needs: QB, WR, OL  |  Focus: Modernize the offense

The Steelers are searching for a long-term answer at quarterback while upgrading their receiving corps. The goal is simple: evolve the offense and generate more explosive plays.

The Larger Viewpoint

Zooming out, a clear pattern is forming across the league:

  • Struggling teams are searching for quarterbacks
  • Mid-tier teams are fixing protection and structure
  • Contenders are adding depth and pass rush

The blueprint is there. The priorities are clear. Now it comes down to execution.

"Which teams have truly fixed their problems - and which teams have only delayed them? That answer will define the 2026 NFL season."
