S³ BOXING | POST-FIGHT REPORT
October 17, 2026 | Las Vegas, Nevada
Official Result: Armando Reséndiz defeats Koen Mazoudier by unanimous decision (98–92, 97–93, 97–93).
Armando Reséndiz returned to the win column Saturday night, but his victory over Australian contender Koen Mazoudier raised more questions than answers about his position among the world's best super middleweights.
The former world champion entered the contest against a fighter who had climbed two weight classes from 154 to 168 pounds. What initially appeared to be an opportunity for Reséndiz to reestablish himself became one of the evening's most competitive battles.
THE FIGHT
Mazoudier captured the opening round before Reséndiz began establishing his offense through effective counterpunching and a sustained body attack.
By the fourth round, the Mexican fighter appeared to be taking control. His body punches were slowing Mazoudier, and a late assault had the Australian in serious trouble.
A stoppage in the fifth seemed possible.
Instead, Mazoudier responded.
The Australian outworked Reséndiz in Round 5 and began repeatedly finding success with his uppercut in Round 6. He continued that momentum into the seventh, getting the better of several exchanges and landing a strong right hand at the bell.
Rounds 8 and 9 delivered tremendous back-and-forth action, with neither fighter willing to concede ground.
Reséndiz eventually produced his strongest finish in the tenth, dominating the final minute and nearly stopping Mazoudier before the final bell.
It was a tremendous ending to an entertaining fight.
THE JUDGES GOT THE MARGIN WRONG
S³ has no major objection to Reséndiz receiving the victory. Several rounds were close enough to justify either fighter winning.
Nevertheless, the official scores did not reflect the competitiveness we witnessed.
S³ Unofficial Scorecard: Mazoudier 96–95.
A narrow Reséndiz victory would have been equally understandable.
This was not a one-sided contest, regardless of what the official scorecards suggest.
MAZOUDIER: MORE THAN A BOXING RECORD
There is another element to Mazoudier's performance that deserves recognition.
The Australian has publicly discussed his previous struggles with depression, substance use and serious mental health episodes that required admission to a treatment facility.
His return to professional boxing is an accomplishment in itself.
Saturday night, he stepped into the ring against a former world champion, moved up two weight classes and delivered ten competitive rounds.
He lost the official decision, but demonstrated that he can compete on a much bigger stage.
S³ RANKINGS: A WIN DOESN'T GUARANTEE PROMOTION
This fight was initially viewed as an opportunity to enter the S³ Super Middleweight Top 25.
Nevertheless, Reséndiz entered ranked #27, while Mazoudier was previously ranked in the 70s.
For a former world champion to struggle this significantly against an opponent moving up from super welterweight raises legitimate questions about his current standing.
Reséndiz accepted the assignment on short notice, which deserves consideration. Nevertheless, the S³ rankings are determined by performance, opponent quality and results, not reputation alone.
S³ Rankings Assessment
- Armando Reséndiz: #27, with a potential downward adjustment under review.
- Koen Mazoudier: Significant upward reassessment warranted, despite the defeat.
- Top 25 entry: Not awarded.
S³ FINAL VERDICT
Reséndiz earned the official victory, but Mazoudier earned considerable respect.
The Mexican fighter demonstrated power, effective body punching and an impressive finishing ability. Mazoudier showed resilience, conditioning, technical adjustments and the willingness to fight through adversity.
Both men contributed to an excellent ten-round contest.
But for Reséndiz, the objective was more than winning. It was proving he belongs among the 25 best fighters in the division.
Saturday night's performance did not accomplish that.
