The No. 17 Kansas Jayhawks opened their season with a convincing 95-65 victory over Fordham, but one of the biggest takeaways was the performance of freshman Tyran Stokes.

Stokes wasted little time showing why he could become an important piece of Bill Self's rotation.

The freshman finished with 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting (71.4%) in just 25 minutes, adding a three-pointer and converting four of seven free throws.

It wasn't simply his scoring that stood out. It was how he scored.

Stokes attacked the basket aggressively, absorbed contact and demonstrated the physical strength to finish through defenders. His ability to generate offense without requiring a high volume of shots was particularly impressive.

An Efficient Debut

Kansas received an outstanding performance from Tre White, who led the Jayhawks with 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting. But Stokes provided another dimension to the offense.

While White delivered perimeter scoring, Stokes demonstrated the ability to pressure defenses by attacking the paint.

His efficiency was encouraging, particularly for a freshman playing his first official regular-season game.

There is still room for improvement. Stokes converted just four of seven free throws, an area that could become increasingly important as his offensive responsibilities grow.

Kansas Has Something to Build Around

The Jayhawks shot 58% from the field, outrebounded Fordham 50-33 and dominated transition scoring 23-6.

Stokes contributed to an offense that produced 46 points in the paint and consistently punished Fordham when opportunities opened up.

Kansas also received 10 points and seven assists from Melvin Council Jr., giving the Jayhawks another experienced contributor capable of creating opportunities for their younger players.

S³ Final Assessment

One game doesn't establish a freshman as a star, especially against an opponent Kansas was expected to defeat comfortably.

But Stokes demonstrated three qualities that should translate against stronger competition: physicality, offensive aggression and efficient shot selection.

The next challenge will be maintaining that efficiency against bigger, more athletic defenses.

S³ Verdict: Tyran Stokes passes his first test. Kansas may have a freshman capable of becoming one of its most important offensive weapons as the season progresses.
