Ryan Garcia promised that his WBC welterweight title defense would not last five rounds. He needed only two.
Conor Benn opened the fight with relentless pressure, repeatedly charging inside and forcing Garcia into heated exchanges. Benn absorbed several left hooks and landed enough offense of his own to make the opening round competitive, but his aggression placed him directly in Garcia’s danger zone.

Garcia detonated a massive right hand in Round 2 that badly hurt Benn. The champion immediately attacked, unloading power punches as Benn attempted to hold and recover. Referee Thomas Taylor stepped between them and stopped the contest, giving Garcia a spectacular second-round TKO victory.
The stoppage appeared slightly premature for a world-championship fight. Benn was badly hurt, but he was still trying to defend himself. Garcia appeared close to producing an unquestionable finish, and the intervention denied him that opportunity.
Still, nothing about Garcia’s performance was unclear. His speed was sharper, his power was heavier, and his timing punished Benn’s aggression almost immediately.
