Joe Milton III has reached a point in his NFL career where development needs to become opportunity.
The Dallas Cowboys want Milton back on their practice squad after choosing Sam Howell as Dak Prescott's primary backup. There's nothing wrong with Milton accepting that offer. This is still the NFL. It's a job, and money is a tool we all need. Staying in Dallas would allow Milton to continue developing while remaining only an injury or roster move away from being elevated.
But S³ believes Milton should be looking for more.
Milton completed 29 of 43 passes for 378 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions during the 2026 preseason. He completed 67.4% of his passes and once again displayed the tremendous arm talent and athletic ability that have made him one of the NFL's more intriguing developmental quarterbacks.
And this isn't the first time Milton has shown that potential.
When Milton entered the NFL with New England in 2024, he was developing alongside No. 3 overall pick Drake Maye. Maye was always going to receive the greater investment and opportunity because New England had selected him to become its franchise quarterback. But Milton showed enough during his time with the Patriots to demonstrate that he belonged in the conversation as an NFL quarterback.
Two years later, we're still waiting to find out what Milton could become with a legitimate opportunity.
The Clock Is Ticking
Milton is now 26 years old.
There's value in sitting behind established quarterbacks and learning an NFL offense, but eventually a quarterback has to play. Another year on a practice squad means another season spent waiting for someone else's opportunity to become his.
That's why S³ believes Milton should bet on himself.
Don't leave Dallas simply to become another team's QB3 or practice-squad quarterback. If Dallas represents the best opportunity available, take the job and continue collecting an NFL paycheck.
But if another team offers an active-roster spot and a legitimate opportunity to compete for QB2, go.
And if there's an organization willing to open the door to an eventual competition for QB1?
Don't hesitate.
Joe Milton doesn't need another team telling him how impressive his physical tools are. He doesn't need another preseason proving that he can make NFL throws.
He needs an opportunity to find out whether he can become an NFL starting quarterback.

Bet on your arm. Bet on your athleticism. Bet on the work you've already put in.
The Cowboys may provide security.
Another team might provide opportunity.
