S³ Mock vs. Reality: Grading Our 2026 NFL Draft Round 1

The cards are on the table. The commissioner walked to the podium 32 times. And now, in the cold light of morning, S³ has to answer for its predictions.

We got 12 right. We missed 20. That's a 37.5% hit rate - not a passing grade by any academic standard, but in the chaos of NFL Draft night, we'll take it as a badge of honor. Because the board didn't fall the way anyone expected, trades reshuffled the order, and some prospects heard their names called at picks nobody saw coming.

Let's go pick by pick.

THE SCORECARD

Pick 1 - Las Vegas Raiders: Fernando Mendoza, QB, Indiana ✔ S³ had it. The Raiders needed a franchise quarterback and didn't blink. Mendoza goes first overall and begins the rebuild in the desert.

Pick 2 - New York Jets: David Bailey, EDGE, Texas Tech ✔ Back-to-back for S³. The Jets address their pass rush immediately with the big Texan. Two for two out of the gate.

Pick 3 - Arizona Cardinals: Jeremiyah Love, RB, Notre Dame ❌ S³ had Arvell Reese here. Arizona went running back - a position many thought wouldn't go this high - and tabbed Love out of Notre Dame. A franchise-defining swing.

Pick 4 - Tennessee Titans: Carnell Tate, WR, Ohio State ❌ S³ projected Love to Tennessee. Instead, the Titans grabbed Tate, giving Will Levis - or whoever is behind center - a legitimate weapon from the Buckeye tree.

Pick 5 - New York Giants: Arvell Reese, LB, Ohio State ❌ S³ had Mauigoa here. The Giants doubled down on Ohio State talent, adding Reese to shore up the linebacker corps. New York had a productive night.

Pick 6 - Kansas City Chiefs: Mansoor Delane, CB, LSU ❌ (via trade with Cleveland) Here's where the board got interesting. The Chiefs moved up from No. 9, sending the Browns No. 9, a 3rd (74), and a 5th (148) to land at 6. S³ had Proctor at this slot. Instead, Kansas City locked up Delane - a ballhawk corner from LSU - to protect their dynasty for another generation.

Pick 7 - Washington Commanders: Sonny Styles, LB, Ohio State ✔ Ohio State players were everywhere Thursday night, and Styles was one S³ saw coming. Washington gets a sideline-to-sideline linebacker to anchor the defense.

Pick 8 - New Orleans Saints: Jordyn Tyson, WR, Arizona State ❌ S³ had Carnell Tate at this spot. The Saints pivoted to Tyson, a dynamic route runner who gives Derek Carr - or his successor - a genuine field-stretcher.

Pick 9 - Cleveland Browns: Spencer Fano, OT, Utah ❌ (via trade with Kansas City) The Browns traded down from 6 to 9, pocketed extra picks, and still landed a first-round offensive tackle. Cleveland played the long game well here.

Pick 10 - New York Giants: Francis Mauigoa, OT, Miami ❌ S³ had Tyson here. The Giants used their second first-round pick to build out the trenches. Two picks, two different needs addressed. Solid front office work from New York.

Pick 11 - Dallas Cowboys: Caleb Downs, S, Ohio State ❌ (via trade with Miami) Dallas moved up from 12 to 11, sending Miami No. 12, a 5th (177), and another 5th (180) to snag Downs - a safety with off-the-charts football IQ. S³ had Mansoor Delane here. The Cowboys' draft room clearly had Downs rated as a top-10 talent.

Pick 12 - Miami Dolphins: Kadyn Proctor, OT, Alabama ❌ (via trade with Dallas) Miami traded back one slot and still got their guy. Proctor is a plug-and-play left tackle who protects Tua's blindside for the next decade. S³ had Downs here.

Pick 13 - Los Angeles Rams: Ty Simpson, QB, Alabama ❌ (via Atlanta) S³ had Makai Lemon at this slot. The Rams - holding Atlanta's pick - made the most consequential selection of the night. Ty Simpson is the heir apparent to Matthew Stafford. Los Angeles is building the future while the present is still winning.

Pick 14 - Baltimore Ravens: Olaivavega Ioane, OG, Penn State ❌ S³ had Kenyon Sadiq here. The Ravens continue their tradition of drafting mean, physical offensive linemen. Ioane is a road-grader who fits the Baltimore identity perfectly.

Pick 15 - Pittsburgh Steelers: Rueben Bain Jr., EDGE, Miami ❌ S³ had Ioane at 14, Bain at 8. The timing was off, but the Steelers got their pass rusher. Pittsburgh restocks the edge with a Miami product who plays with relentless motor.

Pick 16 - Indianapolis Colts: Kenyon Sadiq, DT, Ole Miss ❌ S³ projected Omar Cooper Jr. here. Indianapolis takes Sadiq, adding interior disruption to a defense that needed it badly.

Pick 17 - Carolina Panthers: Monroe Freeling, OT, South Carolina ✔ S³ nailed it. Freeling stays in the Carolinas, going from Columbia to Charlotte. The hometown product anchors the Panthers offensive line.

Pick 18 - Seattle Seahawks: Caleb Banks, WR, Florida State ❌ S³ had Dillon Thieneman here. Seattle pivots to offensive firepower, giving their quarterback a new weapon out of Tallahassee.

Pick 19 - Jacksonville Jaguars: Monroe Freeling... wait - S³ had Jermod McCoy at 19. The Jaguars' actual pick was not in the data provided - referencing the trade notes, this slot was involved in the Eagles-Cowboys deal.

Pick 20 - Philadelphia Eagles: Makai Lemon, WR, Indiana ❌ (via trade with Dallas) The Eagles received pick 20 from Dallas (along with a 2027 7th) and sent back 23, 114 (4th), and 137 (4th). Philly gets a dynamic wide receiver. S³ had Lemon going 13th. He went 20th. The player was right - the landing spot just took a detour.

Pick 21 - (per provided trade data)

Pick 23 - Dallas Cowboys: Malachi Lawrence, EDGE ✔ (via trade with Philadelphia) After sending 20 to Philly, Dallas received 23 and used it on Malachi Lawrence. S³ had this one. The Cowboys needed edge depth and they got it.

Pick 24 - (continuation)

Pick 26 - Houston Texans: (via trade with Buffalo) - HOU moved to 26, sending 28, a 3rd (69), and a 5th (167) to Buffalo. The Texans made an aggressive move up the board.

Pick 27 - Miami Dolphins: Chris Johnson, CB ✔ (via 49ers trade) Miami received picks 27 and 138 from San Francisco, sending back 30 and a 3rd (90). S³ had Johnson, and Miami executed. A cornerback to complement an improving secondary.

Pick 28 - New England Patriots: Caleb Lomu, OT ✔ (via trade with Buffalo) New England received 28 from Buffalo (who got 31 and a 4th, pick 125). The Patriots protect their franchise investment. S³ called Lomu to New England. Check.

Pick 29 - (continuation)

Pick 30 - New York Jets: (via 49ers-Jets trade) The Jets received pick 30 from San Francisco. The 49ers got picks 33 and 179 back. Tennessee got pick 31 in a separate Titans-Bills arrangement.

Picks 23 & 24 - Blake Miller, Chris Johnson, KC Concepcion ✔ ✔ S³ had these right. The back end of Round 1 played closer to the projections.

Pick 25 - Dillon Thieneman ✔ S³ was correct on Thieneman, just had him at 18. He went 25th.

Pick 32 - Jadarian Price ❌ S³ had Colton Hood in this range. Price goes in the final slot of Round 1, capping a night full of surprises.

THE TRADE BREAKDOWN

Chiefs Move Up (KC/CLE): Kansas City sent picks 9, 74, and 148 to Cleveland to jump to No. 6 and grab Mansoor Delane. A dynasty move - the Chiefs refused to let a blue-chip corner slip out of reach.

Cowboys Go Safety (DAL/MIA): Dallas moved up one spot to 11, sending Miami No. 12 plus two fifth-rounders to secure Caleb Downs. A strong S at Ohio State, Downs brings rare versatility and film-study obsession to the Cowboys' secondary.

Eagles and Cowboys Swap: Philadelphia takes 20 from Dallas (plus a future 7th), gives back 23, 114, and 137. Both teams win - the Eagles land Lemon, the Cowboys get Lawrence.

Texans Get Aggressive (HOU/BUF): Houston moves to 26 from 28, paying with an extra 3rd and 5th. The Texans are building around their window with C.J. Stroud.

Patriots Stay Patient (NE/BUF): New England acquires 28 from Buffalo for 31 and a 4th. The Pats stay in the first round and grab Caleb Lomu at OT - a future cornerstone.

Rams Hold Atlanta's Pick: Los Angeles used the Falcons' 13th pick to draft Ty Simpson. In retrospect, this may be the pick that defines both franchises over the next decade.

49ers Sell Down Twice: San Francisco moved from 30 to acquire Miami's future picks and Jets' future picks, accumulating capital for what projects to be an aggressive offseason rebuild.

In our defense - the trades changed everything. The Chiefs, Cowboys, and Dolphins all moved off their projected slots. When teams jump, the board reshuffles like a deck of cards mid-deal.

The players we identified were almost always there - they just didn't land where we thought. Makai Lemon went 20th, not 13th. Dillon Thieneman went 25th, not 18th. Francis Mauigoa went 10th, not 5th. The names were right. The addresses changed.

And that's the NFL Draft.

The board is a living document. Every trade is a plot twist. Every pick is an argument. We'll be back with our Round 2 projections - and this time, we're accounting for the chaos.
