Jayson Tatum continued his impressive start to the 2026–27 NBA season, scoring 32 points and dishing out seven assists as the Boston Celtics defeated the Orlando Magic 108–97 on Sunday.
Tatum shot 42.1% from the field and grabbed four rebounds, leading a Boston offense that overcame a difficult night from three-point range.
The Celtics connected on just 27% of their three-point attempts but compensated with ball movement, defensive activity and efficient free-throw shooting.
Paul George contributed 17 points, six rebounds and eight assists, while Derrick White added 12 points. Luka Garza provided valuable production off the bench with 12 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Boston finished with 29 assists, nine steals and seven blocked shots, demonstrating its ability to impact the game beyond scoring.
Orlando's Young Players Respond, but Celtics Have Too Much
With Paolo Banchero absent from the lineup, Orlando needed additional production from its supporting cast.
Anthony Black answered with 23 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Tristan da Silva matched Black's scoring total, finishing with 23 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
Desmond Bane contributed 19 points, while Franz Wagner recorded 14 points, six rebounds and 12 assists.
Orlando actually held advantages in three-point shooting, converting 36% compared with Boston's 27%, and rebounding, 43–41.
But the Magic struggled to match Boston's overall offensive execution.
The Celtics shot 44% from the field compared with Orlando's 42%, while recording five more assists and three more steals.
Tatum's MVP-Caliber Start
Tatum's 32-point performance offered another example of his importance to Boston.
The Celtics didn't need an exceptional three-point shooting performance to secure the victory. Instead, Tatum's scoring, playmaking and the team's collective defensive effort were enough to overcome Orlando.
That's an important characteristic of a championship-caliber team: finding different ways to win when one aspect of the offense isn't working.
Tatum is building an early MVP argument, although the season is still young.
S³ Final Assessment
Boston's 108–97 victory was a demonstration of offensive versatility and defensive execution.
Orlando received strong performances from Black and da Silva, but the absence of Banchero limited its offensive options.
For the Magic, the bigger concern remains their ability to consistently compete against the Eastern Conference's stronger teams.
For Boston, the early results are encouraging.
The Celtics are winning, Tatum is producing, and Boston is demonstrating that it doesn't need everything to go perfectly to control a basketball game.
