Miami enters the 2026–27 college basketball season with rising expectations, an increasingly talented roster and an opportunity to establish itself among the nation's elite programs.

Following a 26–9 campaign that ended in the NCAA Tournament's Round of 32, head coach Jai Lucas begins his second season with the Hurricanes ranked No. 14 in the S³ Preseason Top 25.

Miami has the personnel to compete with quality opponents. But turning that talent into a legitimate championship contender remains the next challenge.

Henderson Leads the Hurricanes

Sophomore Shelton Henderson returns as Miami's most important player.

After averaging 13.7 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists as a freshman, Henderson enters his second season with Preseason First Team All-ACC recognition.

His physicality, scoring efficiency and versatility provide Miami with a dependable foundation.

Malik Reneau gives the Hurricanes another established scoring threat, while Villanova transfer Acaden Lewis adds playmaking ability.

Georgia transfer Somto Cyril supplies interior size and defensive potential, and five-star freshman Caleb Gaskins provides another exciting offensive weapon.

The combination gives Lucas a promising roster with legitimate upside.

An Impressive Exhibition Performance

Miami delivered an encouraging performance against preseason No. 24 Vanderbilt on October 23.

The Hurricanes defeated the Commodores 109–96 behind 23 points and 10 assists from Lewis, 20 points from Gaskins and 17 points from Henderson.

Miami shot 58 percent from the field and 48 percent from three-point range.

However, allowing 96 points also demonstrated that the Hurricanes must continue improving defensively.

The offense looks capable of challenging quality competition, but Miami must prove it can defend consistently throughout an entire season.

Opening against Florida and traveling to Duke will provide significant tests of Miami's national credentials.

Additional ranked opponents are possible during the Players Era tournament.

Can Miami Win the ACC?

The Hurricanes enter the season as legitimate conference championship challengers.

Miami was selected fourth in the ACC preseason poll, behind Duke, Virginia and Louisville.

Lucas has enough offensive talent to compete with those programs, but winning the conference will require improved defense, consistent rebounding and dependable performances against quality opponents.

The Hurricanes are a championship dark horse rather than the preseason favorite.

S³ Final Word

Miami has the offensive talent, coaching and experience to make another NCAA Tournament appearance.

Shelton Henderson provides the leadership, Malik Reneau offers dependable interior scoring, and the newcomers add depth and versatility.

But winning against the nation's elite requires more than offensive firepower.

Miami must prove it can defend consistently, execute under pressure and compete against the best teams on its schedule.

S³ projects a 24–8 regular-season record and a Sweet 16 appearance.

Reaching the Elite Eight would represent Miami exceeding our preseason expectations.
