Texas Tech enters the season with an opportunity to remain among the nation's best programs, but the Red Raiders have several questions to answer before they can be considered legitimate championship contenders.
Following a 23–11 season and a second-round NCAA Tournament exit, head coach Grant McCasland returns with an experienced roster, additional backcourt scoring and one of the biggest individual X-factors in the Big 12.
The Return of JT Toppin
The biggest question surrounding Texas Tech is the health of JT Toppin.
Before suffering a season-ending ACL injury in February, Toppin averaged 21.8 points and 10.8 rebounds. His ability to return to form would substantially improve Texas Tech's outlook.
The Red Raiders also welcome Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn from UNLV and return sharpshooter Donovan Atwell, whose perimeter shooting provides an important offensive weapon.
Darrion Williams returns to Lubbock, adding experience and versatility to the frontcourt.
The Challenge
Texas Tech must establish chemistry while navigating one of college basketball's most demanding conferences.
The Big 12 features Arizona, Houston, Kansas and Iowa State, leaving little room for prolonged inconsistency.
McCasland must also develop reliable offensive production beyond his primary scorers and establish defensive consistency throughout the season.
A Difficult Schedule
Texas Tech faces several significant nonconference tests:
- November 10: Illinois
- November 24: Louisville
- December 13: USC
- December 21: Duke
Conference play brings additional challenges, including two meetings with Houston and home matchups against Arizona and Iowa State.
These games will determine whether the Red Raiders deserve to climb the S³ rankings.
S³ Season Projection
| Category | Projection |
|---|---|
| Preseason Ranking | No. 24 |
| Proposed Record | 22–9 |
| Likely NCAA Finish | Round of 32 |
| Tournament Ceiling | Sweet 16 |
| Biggest Strength | Experienced scoring personnel |
| Biggest Concern | Toppin's recovery and team chemistry |
Record projection covers the 31 guaranteed regular-season contests.
S³ Final Word: Texas Tech has the potential to climb considerably higher than No. 24. Nevertheless, questions surrounding Toppin's recovery and the difficulty of the Big 12 schedule make the Round of 32 a reasonable preseason expectation.
The Sweet 16 remains within reach, but the Red Raiders must earn that distinction through their regular-season performance.
