The Kentucky Wildcats enter Mark Pope's third season with another reconstructed roster, plenty of individual talent and something to prove.
Kentucky opens the S³ preseason rankings at No. 25, carrying a projected 23–9 regular-season record and expectations of advancing to the NCAA Tournament's Round of 32.
Talent Is Not the Question
Kentucky's frontcourt could become its greatest asset. Seven-foot center Malachi Moreno provides an interior presence, while Iowa State transfer Milan Momcilovic gives the Wildcats a dangerous perimeter scoring option.
Washington transfer Zoom Diallo brings additional playmaking and size to the backcourt.
Nevertheless, combining individual talent into a cohesive basketball team is where Pope faces his biggest challenge.
With significant roster turnover, the Wildcats must establish offensive chemistry and develop a consistent defensive identity. The physical demands of SEC basketball will expose those shortcomings quickly if Kentucky struggles to put everything together.
A Challenging Road Ahead
The Wildcats face Kansas, Indiana, Virginia, Louisville and North Carolina during their nonconference schedule.
Those matchups should provide an early indication of whether Kentucky is capable of outperforming its preseason ranking.
The S³ Projection
- Preseason Ranking: No. 25
- Projected Record: 23–9
- Likely NCAA Finish: Round of 32
- Tournament Ceiling: Sweet 16
- Biggest Concern: Chemistry and defensive consistency
Kentucky has enough talent to win an NCAA Tournament game. Nevertheless, an extended March Madness run would require the Wildcats to exceed their current expectations.
The Sweet 16 is possible, but the Round of 32 is where S³ sees Kentucky finishing.
S³ Final Word: The Wildcats have the personnel to climb the national rankings, but that potential must translate into victories. Until then, Kentucky begins at No. 25, with 23 regular-season wins and one NCAA Tournament victory as our preseason projection.
